Are all farms open year-round?

No, most farms are only open during the summer season. Check the What's Open, When page to see when a specific farm is open.

Are wineries open everyday?

Check the What's Open, When page to see when a specific winery is open and what their hours are.

Do farm stands and wineries except credit cards?

As a general rule most wineries will accept credit cards and most farm stands only except cash. Check with the farm stand/winery that you would like to visit for specifics.

How can I decide which farm or winery to visit?

Look under the What’s Open When page to find the products and activities that interest you along with what farms and wineries are open at that time. There are also several suggestions on the Driving Routes page to help you plan your visit.

How far apart are the farms?

Most Delta farms range in size of 80 to 1000 acre parcels.  The distance between farms and wineries can be as few as 1/2 mile to as far as 15+ miles.  The overall distance along CA Scenic Hwy 160 from the town of Freeport to Hwy 12/Rio Vista is 37 miles. This is about a 45 minute drive without stops.

Are there places to eat along Hwy. 160?

Yes, there are several places to eat in the following towns: Freeport, Clarksburg, Courtland, Locke, Walnut Grove, Isleton, and Rio Vista.  A few of the farms and wineries have some food and are identified on the What's Open When page.  Check out our Associate Members' businesses on our Other Delta Places page.  Stop by some of these shops and restaurants on your visit.

What should I know before I go?

There are several things that will make your trip into the Delta more enjoyable.
  • Make sure you have plenty of gasoline.  There is only 1 gas station between Sacramento/Elk Grove and Rio Vista.
  • Bring cash, some farms and restaurants do not take credit cards.
  • Bring a cooler with ice for all your purchases of wine, produce, and eggs.
  • Set aside enough time to enjoy the drive through the Delta. Relax and enjoy the scenery.
Farm Safety
  • Watch for slow moving tractors and large trucks hauling products on the farm and on roadways.  Slow down on roads and pass only when appropriate and safe.
  • Read farm signs/information/rules before going out on the farm.
  • On the farm, remain in marked designated areas for your safety.  Farms are an active operation.
  • Follow all food safety procedures as posted by the farm.
  • Please deposit trash in provided trash containers or take it with you.
  • Don’t climb trees or ladders.
  • You are responsible for your children and pets.  Check to see if pets are allowed.
  • Respect the property of our members.
  • If not sure, ask questions of what’s appropriate.

Where can I get gas?

There is a gas station at the East side of the Walnut Grove Bridge and in the town of Rio Vista. Before entering the Delta, there are gas stations along I-5 at the Meadowview/Freeport exit, Laguna Blvd exit, Elk Grove Blvd Exit, and Walnut Grove/Thornton Rd exit. Coming from West Sacramento, there is Tower Mart on Jefferson Blvd at Linden Rd. Coming from the Bay Area/ Hwy 4 on Hwy 160, there are a few in Oakley.

Are pets allowed?

Be sure to check with the farm or winery that you would like to visit. Fresh market food safety regulations do not allow animals in the fields or orchards before or during harvest.  If you do bring your pet, remember to bring your own supply of water for them. Cars can get quite hot while you are visiting and shopping.

Are buses tours welcome at the farms/wineries?

Most farms and wineries can accommodate bus parking and large tour groups. Check with the specific farm/winery first for limitations.  Commercial farms and some wineries may require prior notification in order to better assist your large group.

Are the visits to the farms/wineries only by bus tour groups?

No, most visitors travel in their own cars, at their own pace with an itinerary in mind. There are a few suggested driving routes on the Driving Routes page that can help you map out your trip on our Farm and Winery Trail.

We have a large group that would like to tour the farm & winery trail. Is there someone who can help coordinate our trip?
